Crafts night

The SNSA gets together once a semester to create arts and crafts! Given instructions by an individual or group, we create many different things, from foldable stars to woven hearts! Each night also follows a specific theme such as Jultid (Christmas) or Valentine's Day. Crafts Night is also a great opportunity for us to gather with one another and have a mini fika, all while making art.

FIKA

Fika is a Swedish tradition of getting together with friends & family and chatting. It is most often accompanied with coffee and pastries or sweets and is an integral part of the Swedish lifestyle. The SNSA and the Nordic Studies Department hold a fika every Wednesday in the Buchanan Tower CENES Lounge with coffee, tea, and pastries. Feel free to join us and get to know fellow students as well as professors and faculty from the Central, Eastern, and Northern European Studies (CENES) department.

Lucia

Lucia is a Scandinavian celebration that takes place in December. Choirs dress in white robes and perform a candlelit procession while singing traditional songs as a way of bringing light to the darkness of winter. The choir also selects one member to be Lucia (an ancient martyr who brought food to those in hiding) who wears a crown of candles. The SNSA has carried out this tradition for many years with a choir of students performing Swedish and Danish songs.

SÁmi day

The Sámi are the Indigenous people of Sápmi (Sámi land), which includes parts of Northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. February 6th is Sámi Day, when the Sámi people are honoured in the Nordic countries. Each year in February, the SNSA hosts a guest lecture for the UBC community to attend and hear stories about Sámi culture.

trivia night

Trivia Nights are another way that the SNSA celebrates and learns about Scandinavian cultures. At least once per semester, we host a trivia night which includes questions about Scandinavian countries and culture with fun prizes awarded to the winners. It is also a time for us to get together as a club and enjoy refreshments and have fun!
